Dinosaurs were active both day and night, study claims

Some dinosaurs did their hunting at night, new research suggests. Nike Dunk SB Low Studies of the eyes of existing birds and reptiles with different daily activity patterns were compared with similar parts in dinosaur fossils. The results suggests that small, meat-eating dinosaurs were nocturnal; large, plant-eating dinosaurs tended to forage both during the day and at night. The Science study also challenges the notion that mammals' nocturnal nature evolved to avoid day-active dinosaurs. Lars Schmitz and Ryosuke Motani of the University of California Davis have been looking at the eye parts of dinosaurs, and their modern-day descendants the lizards and birds, for a number of years. They have been trying to determine just how big and how light-sensitive dinosaurs' eyes would have been. Nike Dunk High That in turn would be an indication of whether they were active at night; until now the assumption has been that dinosaurs were diurnal, or primarily active in the daytime only. However, fossils give no indication of how large dinosaurs' pupils would have been - an indication of how much light they could gather up, and thus of whether they were nocturnal "night stalkers". A prior study in the Journal of Morphology by the pair that showed that the size of the "scleral ring" - a ring of bone that covers the iris and pupil in many animals - is a good indicator of the size of the pupil. "We measured living lizards and birds to test if you can use these bone parts to distinguish the nocturnals from diurnals," Dr Schmitz explained to BBC News. Coach Madison-Handbags "We picked species for which we know their activity patterns - we know if they are nocturnal, diurnal or both - and then we found we could tell them apart [on the basis of their ocular bone sizes]. "Once we had that established we applied what we learned from the living species to the dinosaurs." The pair measured the eye socket size and scleral ring size of 33 dinosaur fossils, finding that dinosaurs seemed to be busy at a variety of times of day and night. Contrary to what was believed - that most dinosaurs were diurnal - we saw pretty much everything: we had diurnal, nocturnal and species active both day and night, that was the first surprise," Dr Schmitz said. Nike Dunk SB Mid "The activity patterns depend essentially on what they do for a living - what the ecology is. Small carnivores like velociraptor tended to be nocturnal or active day and night; we didn't have a diurnal carnivore in our analysis. "Large herbivores, they were almost exclusively day- and night-active." Dr Schmitz said this was probably because larger animals needed to forage longer to support their large sizes. The find also casts doubt on the idea that mammals - who in modern times are predominantly nocturnal - evolved their activity patterns to avoid being targeted by day-active dinosaurs. "We now know that dinosaurs were active at night as well, so the whole story is much more complicated," Dr Schmitz said. Coach Hobo Handbags "We don't even know if early mammals were truly nocturnal; we have do a lot more research to understand how nocturnality in mammals evolved.

Fujitsu offers UK fast rural broadband network

Fujitsu is to create a superfast broadband network for rural parts of the UK, rivalling BT's service. Coach Madison-Handbags Virgin Media and TalkTalk have already said they will use it to provide internet services. It will also be open to local authorities. Much of the system will be built on BT infrastructure, such as underground ducting and phone poles, which it has been forced to open up to competitors. Fujitsu wants ?500m of government money to help fund the project. That would account for the lion's share of the ?530m the government has set aside to stimulate rural broadband projects. Nike Dunk SB Low This cash comes from a fund originally intended to help the digital switchover. A further ?300m, from the BBC licence fee, will be available after 2015. The money will be given to local authorities with Fujitsu able to bid to provide the network in that area. Without it, the network will not be built, Andy Stevenson, managing director of network solutions at Fujitsu told the BBC. "Assuming we are successful we would hope to add our first retail customer in 2012 and reach 5 million in three to five years," he said. He is hopeful that local authorities will band together to provide funds for the project. Cheap Nike Dunk SB High "We don't want to end up with 40 fragmented networks so it makes sense for regions to come together. That is not mandated but it is what we expect to happen," he said. The announcement comes as research suggests just 1% of UK households currently have access to superfast broadband, defined as speeds of over 25Mbps. The Fujitsu network will offer fibre optic cabling directly to homes - so-called Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH). That could bring speeds in excess of 1Gbps with the potential to go even faster. The system would be more sophisticated than BT's superfast network, which relies mainly on slower Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC) technology. FTTC offers speeds of up to 40Mbps. Genuine choiceCoach Hobo Handbags Other ISPs, community groups and local authorities will be able to take advantage of the network. Duncan Tait, chief executive of Fujitsu thinks it could breathe new life into rural communities. "If done correctly this can be a key vehicle to accelerate recovery in the UK and bring genuine choice to generations of communities staved of participating fully in the UK economy," he said. Virgin Media's chief executive Neil Berkett described it as: "a once in a lifetime opportunity to make the ambition of a digitally enabled society a reality beyond the country's cities and towns". It is estimated that a third of the UK will not be served by existing commercial broadband solutions because it is not economically viable to offer them in remote areas. Nike Dunk SB Mid Communication minister Ed Vaizey said the planned network was "exactly the sort of ambition and innovation" that the government wanted to stimulate. Sebastien Lahtinen, co-founder of broadband news site ThinkBroadband said the collaboration between Fujitsu, Virgin Media and TalkTalk would provide "a real alternative to BT wholesale which could help jump ahead of urban areas". "It is exactly what campaigners for the final third have been seeking. The UK could be about to take the biggest leap forward in next-generation broadband access," he said. Modest pace However, one sticking point could be the price BT is proposing to charge for access to its ducts and poles. It was forced to open them up to rivals but ISPs, including Virgin Media and Sky, have written to the government asking it to reassess the price.Cheap Nike Dunk SB Low In the letter, sent earlier this month, Virgin Media said it would be more cost-effective to build an entirely separate duct and pole network than pay the prices being asked by BT. The government has said it wants to make the UK the best place in Europe for superfast broadband by 2015, but new research suggests that it is being adopted at a relatively modest pace. Broadband analysis firm Point Topic found that just 1% of homes currently have broadband speeds of 25Mbps or above. By the end of 2010, there were 175,000 superfast broadband lines, the majority made up from the 118,000 Virgin Media customers signed up for its 50Mbps broadband service. The rest came from BT or alternative operators.Coach Op Art Handbags "At that rate we should pass the quarter of a million milestone sometime between now and the end of April," said Point Topic chief analyst Tim Johnson.

China sees first quarterly trade deficit in seven years

China has posted its first quarterly trade deficit in seven years, as it continues efforts to rebalance its economy. Nike Dunk SB Mid The deficit for the first three months of the year stood at $1.02bn (?622m), according to the latest data by the General Administration of Customs. For the month of March, the country reported a tiny trade surplus of $140m. China has been trying to boost domestic demand after criticism of its export-led growth policy over the past years. However, demand from its key markets like the US and Europe has slowed down, as those economies recover from the effects of the global financial crisis. Nike Dunk High China has said that it is working towards increasing domestic demand and becoming less reliant on exports to sustain its growth. While the current numbers may suggest a step in that direction, analysts say they are not a definitive indicator of a turn-around in China's trade. "China's exports are likely to remain strong in coming months with recovering demands in the United States and Europe, and China will report a trade surplus in coming months," said Wang Hu, of Guotai Jun'an Securities in Shanghai. There are concerns that the devastation caused by the earthquake and tsunami in Japan may hit Chinese industry. Coach Kristin Handbags "As the world's third largest economy and the biggest source of Chinese imports, Japan is set to affect part of China's foreign trade," said Zheng Yuesheng, statistics chief of the customs administration. Analysts also warn that until the full extent of the damage caused to Japan's economy and businesses becomes clear, it will be difficult to predict how long the impact on other countries will last. "People are still trying to assess the impact of Japan, so it's not easy to say whether this pace can be maintained," said Isaac Meng of BNP Paribas. "It is likely to slow down much more in the second quarter," he added.Women Nike Dunk SB High However, as Japan's economy and businesses look to rebuild and get back on track, analysts say that demand for Chinese goods will surge. "From a longer-term view, the reconstruction in Japan will mean huge demand for Chinese products," Mr Wang said. China has been criticised over its policy on the pricing of its currency. Beijing has been accused of keeping the yuan artificially low in order to support its export sector. A weaker currency makes China's goods cheaper, giving its exporters an edge over their international competitors. Women Nike Dunk SB Low China has said that a sudden appreciation of its currency would be harmful to its economy. However, there has been a slight appreciation of the yuan in the last 12 months, during which it has gained more than 4% against the US dollar. On Monday, the People's Bank of China set the price of the yuan at a historic high of 6.5401 against the US dollar. Analysts say that as the currency appreciates, it is making imports into China cheaper and helping the government in its fight against inflation. They add that a combination of all these factors is helping China move towards its goal of rebalancing its economic growth policy. Nike Dunk Low "Even though the exchange rate is only slowly appreciating, strong inflation, especially labour costs, is making the rebalancing happen," Mr Meng said.

Death-by-dangerous-cycling law considered

Cyclists who kill or seriously hurt pedestrians could be prosecuted like dangerous drivers under new laws being considered by the government. Coach Sunglasses Drivers convicted of death by dangerous driving face up to 14 years in jail. But there is currently no law against causing death by dangerous cycling, with most cases of careless cycling being dealt with by fines. Ten pedestrians were killed by cyclists and 262 seriously injured between 2005 and 2009, official figures say. Conservative MP Andrea Leadsom last month introduced a private member's bill to the Commons, proposing a new offence of causing death by dangerous cycling Cheap Nike Dunk SB Low She used the example of 17-year-old Rhiannon Bennett, who was knocked down and killed by cyclist John Howard as she walked with friends in Buckingham in April 2007. The South Northamptonshire MP told the Commons: "There needs to be a charge that reflects the seriousness and consequences of a cyclist's actions." "A cyclist approached the group at speed, jumping from the road to cut across the pavement and yelling, 'Move! I'm not stopping!"' "He was travelling so fast the group had no time to act. He hit Rhiannon, knocking her over and smashing her head against the kerb. "She was rushed to hospital with head injuries and she died six days later." Coach Boots Magistrates later convicted Howard, then aged 36, of Buckingham, of dangerous cycling and fined him ?2,200. Mrs Leadsom compared the penalty with the maximum 14-year jail term to which a judge could sentence a motorist convicted of causing death by dangerous driving. Normally, private members' bills stand little chance of becoming law, without government backing. But the Department of Transport told BBC News it was considering backing the proposed legislation and would make a decision "in due course" after consultation with the Ministry of Justice. Road Safety Minister Mike Penning said: "I have met with Rhiannon Bennett's family and have the deepest sympathy with them. cheap gucci outlet store "I am clear that everyone who uses the road - including cyclists - has a responsibility to behave safely and with consideration for others. First Choice to offer only all-inclusive holidays

Travel firm First Choice will make all its holidays "all inclusive" from next year, claiming it will save money. cheap coach handbags outlet It says from next summer it will become the UK's first mainstream holiday company specialising in the field. The package will include flights, in-resort transfers, hotel accommodation, three meals a day and unlimited local drinks as standard. The move is the polar opposite from the past decade's trend of building your own holiday. Low-cost airlines and the internet exposed travel companies' profit margins, although two types of package holidays fought back - the cruise and the all-inclusive holiday - such as that offered by the Sandals chain of resorts. Typically, these were advertised as upmarket and somewhat exclusive and, squeezed between the two, mainstream travel companies lost their market share. coach handbags outlet Figures from the Office for National Statistics showed the package holiday market peaked in 2002, when 20.6m were taken. Last year, figures showed that the number had slipped to 17.9m. 'All-inclusive portfolio' First Choice said its research had shown that demand for all-inclusive holidays had grown by 32% in five years. Already, 65% of its holidays are of this type. Johan Lundgren, managing director of TUI UK & Ireland, the parent company of First Choice, said the move was a first for the mainstream holiday industry. It is marketing all-inclusive deals as suitable for budget conscious UK holidaymakers, citing a "price test", in which it compared the cost of a family holiday at its all-inclusive resort in Benidorm, to one staying in a bed and breakfast.Nike Dunk Low This, it said, showed a typical family could save more than ?500 a week by taking the all-in option. It suggested that a family staying at a bed and breakfast would pay ?157.06 a week on entertainment and ?38.43 on snacks. 'Devil's work' Simon Calder, the travel editor for the Independent newspaper, queried some of the figures used in the price comparison offered, including the cost of an ice cream in a Tenerife supermarket, which First Choice's survey put at ?2.20. He said all-inclusives cut off a number of the pleasurable things to be experienced on holiday - and did nothing for local trade. Nike Dunk SB Low "From every point of view, except perhaps holiday company shareholders, all-inclusives are the devil's work. From the holidaymaker's perspective, they dampen the appetite to explore - because as soon as you step beyond the walls the meter starts running and you're incurring extra costs. "Therefore you're not getting the range of experiences you would find if you simply used the hotel for sleeping in, and explored the options in the area." But he said the move was a good one from a branding point of view.Cheap Nike Dunk SB High "When Thomson merged with First Choice a few years ago, it meant the same company had two very strong brands. Since then there's been a lot of confusion. This year I booked a Thomson holiday but flew on a First Choice plane. Moving First Choice into a single-concept brand is a neat solution to that problem."

Indian trade unions strike against price rises

A 24-hour nationwide strike called by trade unions has caused major disruption in parts of India. UGG Australia Tall Classic Women's Boots beva 5818 The walkout was felt mostly in Tripura, Kerala and West Bengal states where the ruling Communists backed the action. Three and easy for United

Dimitar Berbatov broke the deadlock after 33 minutes when he fired home inside the box from Paul Scholes' pass. Nike Womens Air Max 2000 Darren Fletcher added a second four minutes before the break when he turned inside the six-yard box to drive the ball past Steve Harper. Ryan Giggs came off the bench to volley home the third from Scholes' pass five minutes from time to maintain his remarkable record of scoring in every Premier League season. It was part of another masterclass from man-of-the-match Scholes, who with every game must make Fabio Capello cringe at his failure to lure the 35-year-old out of international retirement for World Cup duty in the summer. Nike Womens Air Max 2003 The only real disappointment for United was another blank day for Wayne Rooney, who has now gone 13 matches for club and country since he last scored, against Bayern Munich in March. Questions will continue to be asked of Rooney until he starts to show the form that established himself as one of the world's leading players last season. Yet at times, it almost feels as though Rooney is trying too hard. His work-rate remains impressive but too often shots are snatched. Nike Womens Air Max 2009 He succeeded only in battering a free-kick into the Newcastle wall with one obvious opportunity, then skied Berbatov's nod-back high over the bar when far better was expected. Even his part in United's second goal was accidental as he failed to control Patrice Evra's low cross and succeeded only in prodding the ball towards Fletcher, whose smart turn and finish brought an admiring nod of approval from the unselfish England man. Since his club record ?30.5million arrival from Tottenham, Berbatov has often found himself as the man being sacrificed by Sir Alex Ferguson in the biggest United games.Nike Womens Air Max 90 With Javier Hernandez threatening to take Old Trafford by storm and Michael Owen's lack of match practice costing him a place on the bench, Berbatov knew he must start to impress on a more consistent basis. He certainly showed Rooney the way to goal when Antonio Valencia showed admirable determination in getting back to win possession for his team which John O'Shea quickly moved forward to Scholes.Nike Womens Air Max 95 Zen Opener The old master wasted no time in pushing the ball towards the Bulgarian, who was marginally onside and profited further when Jose Enrique nudged the ball further forward as he attempted to tackle. Berbatov steadied himself before drilling a shot from an acute angle into the far left corner. Nike Womens Air Max 97 It was the first harsh lesson of top-flight life for Newcastle, who surprised many, including Ferguson, by bouncing back from the Championship quite so soon. Young striker Andy Carroll was one of the major factors in their promotion. But after getting away from Nemanja Vidic with a superb run across the United box, he should have buried Joey Barton's corner instead of nodding a golden chance to put Newcastle ahead tamely wide. Later, with the points effectively secure, United set about boosting their goal difference. Nike Womens Air Max LTD Rooney may be struggling to locate the net but there was plenty to be admired about his delicate touch to find Berbatov after Scholes had played the initial bullet pass. Save It was a better chance than the one Berbatov had converted earlier. Again he beat Harper, but this time also put the ball wide of his left-hand post. Nike Womens Air Max LTD 2 For Rooney, it was his last meaningful involvement before he was replaced by Hernandez. At least he is another hour closer to the 600 minutes of playing time Capello thinks he needs to achieve top form, although the process would surely be accelerated if he could find the net. Anything would do, including the bizarre one off his face that Hernandez managed in the Community Shield. Nike Womens Air Max LTD2 That goal ensured the Mexican was not searching for his first competitive goal as he chased about. But it was the tracer-bullet accuracy of Giggs that proved to be the difference late on after he had been picked out by his old friend Scholes.

Cats capture Onuoha

Sunderland have bolstered their defensive ranks by drafting in Nedum Onuoha on loan from Manchester City. Air Max 1 Mesh The highly-rated centre-half has agreed a season-long deal at the Stadium of Light. Onuoha has spent his entire career to date with City, having graduated through the club's academy ranks. He has made 113 appearances in all competitions for the Eastlands outfit and is still held in high regard by the Blues. DevelopmentAir Max 1 Premium However, competition for places under Roberto Mancini is fierce, with the club having used their considerable backing to piece together a star-studded squad. With that in mind, Onuoha has decided that his development would be best served elsewhere. Sunderland boss Steve Bruce has long been an admirer of the former England U21 international and wasted no time making his move once an opportunity arose. Air Max 180 It is easy to see why the Black Cats were so keen to reach an agreement, as Onuoha is a versatile operator who will provide options across the back four. Powerful He is equally adept at full-back as he is at the heart of the back four and could prove to be a shrewd acquisition by Bruce as the season goes on. "Nedum is a modern-day defender," the Black Cats boss told the club's official website. Air Max 180 Plus II "He's big, quick and powerful - a really good defender, who, despite his age, has already played over 100 games. He has all the attributes a modern defender needs. "Nedum is someone I've tracked for a long time so it's great to get the deal done to bring him here. He can play anywhere across the back line, too, so it's Air Max 2003 great to have added that flexibility and some strong competition for places."

Inter duo pen extensions

Inter Milan have been boosted by the news that Diego Milito and Javier Zanetti have signed contract extensions with the European champions. Air Max 99 The Argentine duo were key members of Jose Mourinho's squad last season and are expected to feature heavily this time around under Rafa Benitez. Milito, who scored the winning goals in both the UEFA Champions League and Coppa Italia finals as well as in Inter's decisive, final Serie A game of the season, added 12 months to his deal which will now run until June 2014. Club captain Zanetti, 36, added two years to his contract, which was due to run out at the end of the coming season. Pryce eyes Wembley date

St Helens stand-off Leon Pryce is hoping to turn the form of his life into a return to Wembley later this month. Air Max 99 The former Great Britain stand-off has played a starring role for Saints this season as they prepare for their Challenge Cup showdown against Leeds at the Galpharm Stadium on Saturday. "I'm really pleased with my form," Pryce said. "I think it's definitely the best I've played since I've been at Saints. "I've had to adapt my game this year. I played with a dominant half-back like Sean Long for so long and I've tried to be a bit more creative and not rely so much on my running game. I think I've done that.Air Max Elite "It's given me more responsibility. I've had a lot more ball and it's something I've enjoyed. I think I am a player who needs to be challenged. There is still lot of improvement but I'm getting to where I want to be." Pryce's impressive form has not been enough to win over new England coach Steve McNamara, who did not select the St Helens stand-off for the mid-season international against France and failed to include him in a recent get-together of an expanded national squad. Air Max II Pryce, who last played for his country in the 2008 World Cup, said: "What can I do? If I can't get in a 37-man squad, it pretty much says I'm not going to be involved. "I'll just get on with it and play well for Saints. You can't let it hurt you or your form will drop." England captain Jamie Peacock, who will come up against Pryce on Saturday, remains a big admirer of his former Bradford teammate. SpecialAir Max Light "I think he's been special for Saints for quite a long time," said the Rhinos front-rower. "I remember last year he was dragging the team about. You'd say he's been their best player over the last three years. "But Steve made the choice and it's up to him, he knows what he's doing." After joining Saints in 2006, Pryce appeared in the club's three consecutive Cup final victories over Huddersfield, Catalans Dragons and Hull. Air Max LTD Trainer Saturday's semi-final promises to have an extra edge to it as Saints look to avenge their three successive Grand Final defeats, with Leeds looking to reach Wembley for the first time since 1999. Pirates escape with points

Poole dented Lakeside's Elite League play-off hopes with a 46-43 victory at the Purfleet Raceway on Monday night. Air B Huarache The Hammers were never ahead in the meeting after suffering a 5-1 reverse in the second race, but clawed their way back to a one-point deficit going into the final heat. But Chris Holder (8) was first to the bend for the Pirates and clinched a 4-2 with Darcy Ward to earn a three-point away win. Lakeside remain third in the table but are vulnerable to the likes of Swindon, who have several matches in hand entering the final weeks of the season. Poole were six points ahead at one stage but some fireworks from reserve Stuart Robson (9) kept the hosts in the match, and with five heats remaining they were one behind.Air Max 180 TR+ But crucial wins from Bjarne Pedersen (10) and Leon Madsen (7) kept the Pirates' noses in front, and it required a 5-1 from Lee Richardson and Adam Shields (9+1) in the all-important heat 13 to keep the home side in with a chance. McGrady works out for Bulls

Seven-time all-star Tracy McGrady worked out for the Chicago Bulls on Monday with hopes of landing with the team he turned down a decade earlier. Air Max Misc McGrady could be a low-risk addition for a reconfigured team coming off back-to-back first-round playoff exits. The Bulls wouldn't have to pay him much and could refuse to fully guarantee the deal if they make an offer, but there are big questions surrounding his health. The two-time scoring champion had microfracture surgery on his left knee in February 2009 and appeared in just 30 games last season with New York and Houston, averaging 8.2 points. Besides concerns about his condition, another issue is whether he'll accept a more limited role. On his Twitter account in the past week, McGrady praised the Bulls and referenced the courtship 10 years ago when he was one of the top prizes in a free agent class that included Grant Hill and Tim Duncan.Air Max Plus II A three-piece band, cheerleaders, team mascot Benny the Bull and then-general manager Jerry Krause greeted him at O'Hare, but with little talent in place, the Bulls struck out. McGrady wound up leaving Toronto for Orlando, instead. This summer, the Bulls had enough salary-cap space to land two major stars to play alongside all-star point guard Derrick Rose and Joakim Noah. Air Max Solas Chicago went after top prizes LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and former Raptors forward Chris Bosh. They decided to former a superstar trio in Miami, and the Bulls landed two-time all-star forward Carlos Boozer, sharpshooter Kyle Korver and guard Ronnie Brewer, who all played together in Utah. They also added backup guard C.J. Watson and signed veteran forward Kurt Thomas to a one-year deal in a move that was announced on Monday, giving them a strong defender and rebounder to go with Boozer and Noah. And they have a new coach in Tom Thibodeau. "I've been looking forward to seeing Thibodeau get a head coaching job for a number of years," said Thomas, who played for New York when Thibodeau was a Knicks assistant. "He definitely put in his time. He's a hard worker. He's very passionate about the game. And to finally see him get this opportunity and be a part of it is definitely a blessing."Air Max ST The new coach, new additions and core that was in place were big draws for Thomas.
